With their compact size and weighing in at a mere 20 ounces, they're easy to stash in your jacket pocket, backpack, tackle box, carry-on luggage, hydration pack, golf bag, handbag, beach tote, waterproof hatch in your kayak...you get the idea! And since they're waterproof you don't have to worry about getting caught in a sudden downpour or having your four-legged companion slobber on them.
Magnification
Just what does the 8 x 42 mean with these binoculars? The 8 identifies the power of the lens. Objects will appear eight times closer than they do with the naked eye. The 42 stands for the diameter of the objective lenses (the ones furthest from your eyes) in millimeters. The larger the objective lens, the more light can enter the binoculars. The more light they can gather, the brighter objects will appear—particularly important in low light conditions like cloudy days or when fog or rain are part of the equation.
Field of View
This specification is expressed with 1,000 yards as a standard for reference. These Shoreline binoculars have a field of view of 357 feet at 1,000 yards. That means you can see a 357-foot wide object at a distance of 1,000 yards.
Center Focus
Are these binoculars hard to focus? Not at all. A diopter (that ridged collar on the right side eyepiece) adjusts for the difference between your eyes (if there is any). Once you set that, simply turning the center focus knob will adjust the focus for both eyes simultaneously. This set-up makes it easy to view something quickly since you only have to turn the center focus knob when you point your binoculars at objects of varying distances.
Prisms
This pair of binoculars has BaK-4 prisms that use a dense, fine barium crown glass which eliminates internal light scattering and produces sharper images. Without prisms, objects would appear upside down due to the refraction properties of convex lenses.
Multi-Coated Lenses
These binoculars feature multiple layers of optical lens coating to give you high light transmission (the amount of light that reaches your eyes), plus high image sharpness and high color fidelity.
Waterproof
A little rain or getting splashed by an exhuberant swimmer is no problem for these binoculars. They are built to the IPX7 Waterproof Standard. That means they will survive immersion in water for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. However, exceeding that time isn't recommended. So storing them somewhere cool and dry is a good idea. They're also nitrogen-filled so they won't fog up as the temperature changes.
Eye Relief
The twist-up eyecups provide up to 18mm of eye relief so you can adjust them to fit the shape of your face. If you wear eyeglasses just keep them retracted since you have already created the necessary distance between the ocular lenses and your eyes which allows you to see the full field of view. You can even put your eyeglasses directly against the eyecups since their soft rubber prevents scratching.
Rubber Armor
Your binoculars are covered with rhino tough rubber armor. Not only does this protect them from shock and damage, it's also soft and comfortable in your hands.
